This is Daphne of the Apollo and Daphne myth. She was hunted by the love struck Apollo who would not stop chasing her. And rather than be owned by the love of a man - she chose to turn to a tree - which Apollo continued to love. The branch lowered so Apollo could pull laurels from her branches.
